The NYT has a story tonight, mostly behind their paywall, that is summarized thusly:

Agency Threatened With Firings After Contradicting Trump on Dorian
  • Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross was said to have made the threat after a NOAA office rebutted President Trump’s claim that Hurricane Dorian might hit Alabama.
  • His move led to an unusual, unsigned statement later by the agency disavowing the office’s own position that Alabama was not at risk.
Given his level of incompetence and corruption as Commerce Secretary (as well as the context of the Trump administration in general), not shocking, but still pretty disturbing.

At least they haven't been sent to the Gulag (yet).

So the treasonous felon occupying the White House is now instructing former aids Lewandowski, Dearborn and Porter to refuse to testify to Congress because, well because, they could like put him in prison. Oops. All right, nobody cares, but that's OK too.

A touch of class. Trump's first response to the death of major league (bordering on legendary) journalist and author Cokie Roberts: “I never met her. She never treated me nicely”. She was inter alia appointed by President George W. Bush to his Council on Service and Civic Participation. So not exactly a left-wing nut case. But she never treated the idiot nicely...

In a rational world, Trump would be impeached for corruption and emoluments, and then prosecuted for treason and hanged (no ifs, ands or buts, as Boris might say). In the real world, if he is impeached, Mitch F (you can fill in the blank) McConnell will protect Trump at all cost, and thus the purely political process of impeachment will exonerate Trump and probably see him through the 2020 election. I just can't see how this will end peacefully.

At last someone in favour of capital punishment. But in a rational world the same would apply to any Brits collaborating with the EU. That includes several former PMs, many current MPs, probably most of London.

I am told that most Americans either don't care or are now bored with all this. It certainly seems less divisive than Brexit. We can only hope that the UK reaches the US level of sanity one day.

I am selectively in favor of capital punishment. And you are probably right, both Trump and Brexit have worn down reasonable people to the point of "what the fuck, I'm supposed to care?".  But then you sort of look up and notice that your world was just drastically changed for the worse, and you say "oh yeah, I guess I am"

If I don't look at the news, or twitter and don't worry about a few remainer friends who don't speak to me anymore then really not much has changed!

What would the circumstances under which...? Would it make you feel better, just curious. What about the nutter in Norge?
What's your stance on torture? At least no one dies?

Consenting adults can do whatever they want in private. And if one is a criminal you shouldn’t even need their consent.

A new generation of hangmen like Albert Pierpoint will need to be trained. A family tradition, from father to son. He even hanged Lord Haw-Haw.
