Paul,
Apart from not having met as many Irish people as you would have liked, was it notwithstanding a pleasurable visit?
It is a lovely city. However on my random walks I did come across the seedier parts. It’s a skill I have, totally unintentional, perhaps a homing instinct. Never fails me.

Johnson says DUP dinner has not undermined impartiality

https://www.rte.ie/news/2019/0731/1066165-boris-johnson-in-belfast/

Boris knows which side his bread is buttered on; general election coming up (what?) and he needs his 10 DUP friends at Westminster.

For the record, 4 of the 5 political parties in NI are against no-deal BRexit.

The solution is obvious: NI should remain in the customs union with the EU, rest of the UK leaves it, and to avoid the appearance of a "break-up of the UK", the integration of NI with the rest of the UK in other areas (e.g reproduction rights) is accelerated. NI-EU customs union could be subject to a confirmatory referendum in NI, which I would expect would pass with flying colours. Win-win.

The only problem is that after 2016, this solution was framed as "anti-unionist", and it would take some real political effort to change this perception now.

While I wholeheartedly support the “fuck the DUP” part of the argument, it does suffer from the weakness of eliminating the skinny parliamentary majority (presumably) supporting the current government.

Don't know. This is a tech solution and it's not about tech.
The moderate majority on both sides just want to get on with their lives.
The old ideologies will change. Doesn't put food on the table. I see that workers of (East Belfast) Harland and Wolfe  staged a picket with Alliance, SDLP and Sinn Fein against closure while DUP was entertaining Boris for dinner.
The majority of NI wants to stay in EU.

This not a "tech solution". It's a legal solution.

There is a legal solution already. It's called the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement.

You keep missing the point. If you want to make sure there are no border checks, keep NI in a customs union with the EU. It would strengthen the Good Friday agreement.

A better solution is to reunify Ireland (NI is a relict of brits colonialism).

OK, mate. Who told you that?
My house is 2 km from the border, so what do I know.

And there is an agreed deal, signed by Theresa May and EU.

Talk of post-Brexit 'chlorinated chicken and hormone beef' is a 'smear campaign', claims US envoy

https://www.thejournal.ie/chlorinated-c ... 1-Mar2019/

Chlorinated chicken – or chlorine-treated chicken – refers to chicken carcasses that have been treated with antimicrobial rinses to remove harmful bacteria. The practice is common in the US but banned in the EU.
