UK government may face court action after EU citizens denied vote
"People reportedly turned away from European election polling booths due to admin errors" Image
German citizens in UK told they cannot vote (I initially thought the photo was from Grumpy Cat's funeral)

What will they do to us, send Luftwaffe?

Most of the stories I’ve heard are about voters in London.

A. Are Labour-run councils particularly incompetent?

B. Do Guardian journalists and the BBC never venture outside London?

Answer neither, A, B or both.

The voting station here is 50 metres from my house. I voted yesterday for the first time in my life (I pay taxes for nigh on 40 years but your passport is the enabler). The effect was cathartic.

These things are well-organised here on the mainland.

God bless the EU! After 40 years in the wilderness I can now let my voice be heard. Hallelujah.

I knew this was going to happen..

I addressed this very issue with the civil servants in NL. The letter they sent was ambiguous ... they suggested I vote in Ireland. A telephone call and a bit of requirements analysis resolved the issue. QED

I saw the problem coming down the line 4 months ago. Get organised.

IANAL but what UK has done is illegal and against EU law and remember, UK is still in the EU.

Tanja Bueltmann, a historian and prominent citizens rights campaigner, said the election was a scandal that Theresa May “chose not to prevent” despite having been warned several times in the last month about the extra forms EU citizens were being required to submit in order to qualify to vote.

EU voters are spoiled; they expect everything to be error-free. Don't ask what your local council can do for you, but what you must do for your local council.

I know. It seems to be only Germans that are affected. And god knows, they should be experienced in paperwork more than anyone.

Complacency?

I find it hard to understand that the cock-up is limited to Germans.

They do like to complain.

But German bureaucracy is awful. And the EU seem to follow their lead. I once tried to get married in Germany. I gave up.

I never tried Germany myself. Amsterdam is easier. They even give you a nice 'family book' at the ceremony.
The Germans at not a patch on the Dutch masters when it comes to complaining. We have a word for it zeiken. I do it all the time these days.

You probably dodged the bullet.

Anyway, there's a perfect word to describe the situation: Schadenfreude.
