Peasant's social ans emotional life in the early 20th century... I've never thought about it.

You don't like book about countryside, or about peasants?

What about Remarque, then?

Four volumes about Pribram's four Fs (fighting, fleeing, feeding and sex)... And the Nobel for that!

I don’t know. Why does it affect some people and not others? Start by treating the symptoms. Cold showers, bed rest. Total banning from social media.

Any questions?

One springs immediately to mind, what’s the relevance? Other than perhaps avoid people who use social media as well as avoiding it yourself.

Why do so many books from the last decade take the form of alternating chapters from different points of view?

Alice
Julie
Daniel
Alice
Julie
...

Usually going back and forth through time. Often with large chunks in italic (that would be some as yet unnamed character). And we have to wait until near the end to find out what the key event in the past was that the whole story hinges on.

And because we know the pattern, and we know we have to wait until the end, we are thinking right from the start, “I hope it’s worth it.”

And it so never is.

Wrong, Polish literature is quite good, of course - much worse than Czech literature. English literature is stagnating these days, I would suggest some other authors: Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Persian first of all. Don't worry, it's all translated.

Ummm, like you get banned from entering the US because you run a forum where distinctly anti-Trump, i.e. anti-American, sentiments are sometimes expressed.

But that’s nothing to do with TDS. It’s like saying “I don’t have a nut allergy. My face swells up every time I eat a nut because nuts are poisonous.”

Yes, I found one! I looked through dozens of pictures of today's protests and I finally found someone who might be from an ethnic minority!

I'm from almost all ethnic minorities at the same time and I'm pro-brexit :-)

I saw a woman holding a poster quoting Orwell and comparing Bojo to a pig (as a vegan I'm ideologically against pejorative animal epithets). She had a strong French accent and gave a convinced speech that the UK will collapse after the no deal.

I read all of Orwell's works by the time I was 17 and I can tell you he is not what he is made out to be. His Alma Mater was Eton (ok by me) and he worked for MI5 for some time. He was not a great writer but more of a literary critic.

BTW which quote of Orwell? Was it in English?

There seems to be general agreement by Orwell’s fans, left and right, to skate gently over Orwell’s suspicions of Jews, homosexuals and blacks.

The last great English writer was D.H. Lawrence. They don't do him in universities anymore.

The Penguin second edition, published in 1961, contains a publisher's dedication, which reads: "For having published this book, Penguin Books were prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act, 1959 at the Old Bailey in London from 20 October to 2 November 1960. This edition is therefore dedicated to the twelve jurors, three women and nine men, who returned a verdict of 'Not Guilty' and thus made D. H. Lawrence's last novel available for the first time to the public in the United Kingdom."

I think I read that book in 1966, or was it 1967?
