What were those?
Variations on the theme of mercantilism - i.e. the belief that positive bilateral trade balances with other countries is a good thing that should be, if necessary, ensured by protectionist policies. Because the country that holds the most gold wins!

I thought about this before posting. Admittedly not too long since I find logic physically painful. My conclusion was that since I made no explicit assumption about whether I was right or wrong I was safe. But I could be wrong!
