Boris Johnson - the last 100 days

August 27th, 2019, 3:07 pm

As a correspondent, the likely future PM produced exaggerated tales that were lapped up at home

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... d-politics

“He was the paramount of exaggeration and distortion and lies. He was a clown – a successful clown.”

In fairness
The British like genuinely bright people but not swanks and swots and recoil from conceit and arrogance of the continental type of intellectual which is why most ordinary Britons have no time for middle class Marxists.

Brexit Derangement Syndrome, Trump Derangement Syndrome (bearish has a bad case of the latter, and is showing signs of the former),... The interesting question for me is will history come to call this period "The Decade of Mass Hysteria," or will it run to a full century?

That means 6 extra weeks holliers for the DUP. Gives time to spend mote time on their estates. It even longer that Fine Gael holidays.

It's a pity you haven't read FW or even Giambattista Vico. Vico argues in the Scienza Nuova that civilization develops in a recurring cycle (ricorso) of three ages: the divine, the heroic, and the human.

I think we are in the divine age.

Do you still believe in Hell?

Eventually. But first 6 months in Limbo. Purgatory is even worse, because you need money to get out.

I have a relative like this. Only reads the books that will impress people. He won’t look at anything with fewer than 1,000 pages. Reads one book a year. And hates every minute.

In fairness, FW is only 628 pages and Vico is also compact.
BTW my 2nd edition C++ book is 1142 pages.

Ok, I'll bite ;)

Fiction 95%
<400 pages 80%
Alternating 'literature/classics' with easy-read
No 'literature' from this century
Otherwise no preference for any century
English language only, although translations acceptable
I have learned to avoid Russians the hard way (also tend to avoid South American, French, German,...but not as rigorously as the Russians)
I will give up a book at any time before am 50% though if am not gripped
Doesn't have to be adult fiction. There are still plenty of children's books I am catching up on
If something gets bad reviews from people I suspect are snobs then that's a guaranteed read for me
I will often read a series by the same author
I have been known to read many books by the same author because one book impressed me, yet the others were rubbish. (I have a theory that Joseph Heller didn't write Catch 22. If you've read anything else by him you'll know why)
I haven't read Lolita. When I was young I decided I'd wait until I was old to appreciate the pervy nature of Humbert Humbert. I thought 40 was about right. When I got to 40 I reckoned I wasn't old enough, so I'd wait until 50. At 50 I still didn't think I was old enough...
I am saving the complete works of PG Wodehouse as a distraction for the next time I get sued

I probably read just about the complete works of PG Wodehouse in my late teens and early twenties (some of them in translation), and can endorse them. I also read everything by Agatha Christie in the same time frame, so I have had some exposure to the traditional English life style, as described in mass market literature, but literature nonetheless.
