Re: What is democracy?

Speaking of Manchin, an amusing scenario in today's wsj opinion:

1. Senate Democrats strip him of his committee assignments.
2. He switches to Republican, who then control the Senate, and give him his pick of committees -- as well as 50 high fives.

Well, I threw in that last part.   :D

Albeit plausible, I don’t find it amusing in the slightest. But as a practical matter, it would probably only speed things up by a year or two. As Republican controlled states eliminate voting rights for Democrats, or just outright override the vote altogether if it goes against them, I see relatively little hope for a maintained Democratic majority over the course of the next couple of elections. And the dynasty will be back in town for good.

"to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts"
I commemorate those who fought on our side in WW1&2, but I have a problem with those.

Sadly, this kind of freedom quickly turns into resignation and depression, or madness.

No, no, no. Their clothes are “signalling.” Boris is saying he’s a gentleman. The other men are saying, “I’m an estate agent.” I don’t know what the women are saying but I’m getting the tightening in the scrotum that I associate with fear or cold weather.

Boris is clever. He has Matt Hancock for that. At least, that what my Eton neighbour says..

A test: businessmen at airports, you can tell which country they are from by their shoes and socks.

Germans look at your shoes first 1) are they (the shoes) polished? If not forget it.

Boris Johnson suffered a “crushing disappointment” by-election defeat which today sparked claims that the Tory “Blue Wall” around London could be starting to crumble.
