In this case, the parties aren't standing either...
Yes, I've read on mumsnet.com that Western voters think that the pre-election campaign is for them, not the party. It doesn't make any sense, though - it's the party which needs support, especially in today's political reality, under so much public pressure. The party needs help and gentle steering to achieve victory and wield  power. And once it does, it can satisfy their voters.

In actual or de facto two party systems, there is a long history of candidates taking somewhat extreme partisan views in the preliminary campaign (whatever form it takes) to secure votes from the party "base" and then pivoting toward the middle once they are in the general election. But when the process produces candidates like Corbyn, Johnson and Trump, who all seem entirely incapable of pivoting, it doesn't end well.

Is there a single sentient being in the entire universe who believes that the plan to have 16-year olds and EU citizens voting in general elections is anything other than an attempt to rig an election?

I like the way suddenly it’s become an issue that EU citizens living in the UK must be given the vote on the grounds that they pay taxes here. Why do they have to be EU citizens? Surely anyone who pays UK taxes should be allowed to vote. Whether it’s income tax, CGT, or, dare I suggest, VAT. It’s simple logic.

It's a discrimination of non-EU residents again! Ukrains also pay taxes in the UK!

And I’ve paid sales tax in the US so I want to vote for Trump in 2020. No taxation without representation.

You, sir, may keep you tea. We shall hope that Trump is no longer eligible to run in 2020. As for the other issue, it has been all downhill since Cameron brought the referendum on your country. Maybe the resulting troubles will sort themselves out after a couple of generations, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Don’t ever say “troubles”...it’s the magic word that awakens the Cuch!

You’ll notice I used a lower case “t”, but the word wasn’t entirely random. You were the one to claim that the level of hatred runs deeper over Brexit in the UK than over Trump in the US. And I certainly expect more violence here, not counting the NRA/GOP sponsored mass shootings.

Some more magic words then

The five techniques (also known as Deep-Interrogation) are illegal interrogation methods which were originally developed by the British military in other operational theatres and then applied to detainees during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. They have been defined as prolonged wall-standinghoodingsubjection to noisedeprivation of sleep, and deprivation of food and drink.[1]
In 2014, after new information was uncovered that showed the decision to use the five techniques in Northern Ireland in 1971–1972 had been taken by British ministers,[17] The Irish Government asked the ECHR to review its judgement. In 2018, by six votes to one,the Court declined.[18]

It appears to me, although I await full and proper research, that once one catches one of the Derangement Syndromes (Brexit, Trump, Boris, Climate Change) it weakens one’s resistance to the others.

You would say that, wouldn't you? As Mandy Rice-Davies famously said. MRDA.

I would say that. Lots of people were involved in conflicts, but they targeted their oppressors, not innocent civilians (I'm not talking about medieval and earlier times). Besides, a half of a century has passed - time to go home and enjoy all you've so bravely fought for.
