Nice opinion piece in today's WSJ by Lawrence Krauss:
The Ideological Corruption of Science

Same deal as before with that Heather Mac Donald WSJ piece I posted
(which has connections with this one, as you'll see).

That is, since it's behind a paywall, I've posted a link to a
fair use copy,
valid until I've decided it's annoyed enough people:  :D
It's not a great article.
The subtitle has a grammatical error as well as a sloppy forward reference. And quite a number of commas, always a danger.

I don't like the layout. Too many different font styles and sizes, and the spaces between paragraphs have different sizes.

It is fine to be racist to those who don't wear the poppy.

The poppy is sacrosanct.

I would have titled it "How ideology has corrupted science".
It's all a bit sad. Dabbling in social science.

Does WSJ not have style guides, copy editors, etc.

Harvard-MIT Math Tournament Ordinary American kids, the best mathematicians in two of America’s best universities. Asia cannot match this.

I remember when those guys were mostly Russian and EEs. Now we don't give a damn about competitions either. (No attempt at discrediting those youngsters prowess.)

Those Cold War physicists/quants are probably all managers at this stage.

I think those might be high school students (at least, the contestants are).
Next years tournament has been cancelled due to the past winners not being diverse enough, and so obviously the tournament is racist.

Oh wait  ... that's the SAT's

How many students know the chain rule, let's say transforming from (x,t) to (z, tau)

z = z(x,t) = x/s(t)
tau = t

Now transform heat equation/Stefan problem

u_t = u_xx for 0 < x < s(t)

to a PDE in z and tau for 0 < z < 1.

// 95% get it wrong first time.

Hint; use the chain rule and z is a function of TWO variables.

What ever happened to reeding, riting and rithmatic?

In the United States, during the 17th century, the curriculum in the common (elementary) schools of the New England colonies was summed up as the "four Rs" - Reading, 'Riting, "Rithmetic", and Religion.

I wonder what the story is these days? (track?)

So this is a team tournament for high school students, open to exceptional middle school students. So, it’s a good bet that these are largely, if not entirely American kids. Which, I guess, only strengthens the racist (or, to be slightly more polite, cultural otherness) angle.

The story of Brexit is a story of energy conversion – the work of political engineers who mined a generation of scattered grievances and forged them into a single demand, to leave the European Union. Nobody did this more successfully than Nigel Farage, who transformed an untapped reservoir of xenophobic suspicion into a political force by making the EU synonymous with “immigrants”.

From The Guardian! For whom 'energy' means the stuff that flows from crystals along your chakras creating your aura. Hehe!

Why are those on the Left so obsessed with immigrants? Any insights, Cuch?

I wouldn’t underestimate the impact of Steve Bannon. He is currently splitting his time trying to stay out of prison and agitating for Trump to conduct a military coup, but certainly notched a big one in Brexit. With the hope of a no-deal still alive!

I didn't know Nidgel was a Leftie. I suppose he can pretend to be one in his chalet in the Provence.
I never talk politics; don't ask, don't tell. It just annoys people.
