One of my favorites that you and outrun were particularly good at - misplaced emphasis.

(But you have to recognize it for what it is).

To return to the topic at hand, just in case you were wondering:

Covid vaccines do not contain magnetic microchips

Who dreams this stuff up?  But then again, truth can be stranger than fiction.

Hehe. Actually, an embedded credit-card-style chip would have been a good idea for the CDC cards -- prevent forgeries.  :D

@Copenhagentolondon
Re universities, here is an account of the mandatory political test that is now applied first for Univ. of California faculty applicants. This is from an excellent book, "The Breakdown of Higher Education" by John M. Ellis, which I highly recommend. Ellis is emeritus prof. (and former dean of the Graduate Division) from UC Santa Cruz. (I did a post-doc there).

I just started an application for a job there as an experiment, to see if this is true. But the thought of applying for a job made me feel queasy.

A child with a crayon could forge the CDC "cards"!

So true. Would make a good comic. Kid with sidewalk booth: "Lemonade 10 cents. CDC cards 25 cents".

@Alan, it's crazy to see that UC is really going through with that sort of stuff. Merit being of no significant value.

I’m not exactly thrilled by that development either. But, speaking as somebody with more than two decades worth of experience as a quant manger with varying (but generally high and increasing) degrees of pressure to hire “diverse” candidates, leading universities (including the UCs) totally suck at producing them. For one reason or another. Actually, probably for a multitude of reasons, only some of which can reasonably be attributed to said universities. So there is a very real perception of a problem, and this is one (clumsy and heavy handed) attempt to chip away at it.

"The Pfizer-BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine is 88% effective against the Indian variant after two doses, a new study by Public Health England (PHE) has found."

That's great news. I'm guessing I might either wait for Pfizer or go for a AstraZeneca ASAP, so I will be ahead of the curve

I got my 1st Pfizer jab last Saturday. The only complaint is they didn't offer me afternoon tea.

This article is getting a lot of attention:
The origin of COVID: Did people or nature open Pandora’s box at Wuhan?
(Nicholas Wade, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, May 5, 2021)

There are various interviews with the author on youtube, etc.

I like the idea that because Trump said one thing the leftist media had to say the opposite!
