Recall Gavin 2020

February 11th, 2021, 7:15 pm

A new thread to follow this event.

The first milestone, which requires approx 1.5 million signatures by March 17, 2021 to trigger a 2021 special election, looks very likely to be reached

RecallGavin2020 reaches 1.5 million checkpoint ...

With one month to go, should mean a very nice safety margin in the final count!

So, as expected, the recall will make it to the ballot.

Very favorable to the governor is the covid situation in California: excellent stats and the state will open up "fully" on June 15.

There are infrastructure issues that could still bring him down (the utilities turn off people's electricity for fire risk), and legacy covid response issues such as the unnecessary loss of many small businesses due to excessive lock-downs. But, my guess at this point in time is that he will survive the recall.

The odds have changed: Could a Conservative Replace Gavin Newsom?
(should be a wsj free link -- no paywall)

Recall vote is on Sept 14

That is amusing, if only for Murdoch’s letting “good news” through for free.

AFAIK, every wsj article or opinion piece comes with a "copy free link" feature.

I guess I need to totally revise my understanding of what this paywall thing is.

It does indeed look increasingly likely that the village idiot will take over as governor. I don’t know enough about California laws to offer an educated guess whether he can do as much damage as Abbott and DeSantis, but there is no doubt that he’ll try.

I assume you refer to Larry Elder. Personally, did not vote for him but did vote "yes" on the recall and then for former San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer as replacement.

The election rules are simple. First step is yes/no on the recall with a simple majority determining it. Then, if the "yes" wins, the new governor will be whomever gets a plurality among the replacement candidates. There's a huge list (46) including many that are clearly not serious -- even in their own minds. But, if say the "no" recall vote is 49.2% and Elder gets a plurality, no matter how small, he will indeed be the new governor.

Election day is September 14 with mail-in voting now ongoing.

For the grammar purists (where is Cuch??), I guess it should be 'whoever'.

A vote to recall is unequivocally a vote for Elder as governor. Full stop.

The favorite candidate in case governor Newsom is recalled next week by the likes of Alan has repeatedly gone on record calling for reparations from the government over slavery. Specifically, he is calling for reparations to compensate slave owners who so rudely had their property taken away from them.

“I’m not angry!” He says, frothing at the mouth. I have a sentimental connection to California (hence the bear), but in this case it is more grumpy old man, with a hint of exasperation.

So, in the end, Newsom easily survived the recall -- due mainly to large Calif. democratic plurality and likely majority support for vaccine mandates of various kinds.
