Dear peers: I find that this job market's really tough and so far, saturated with Financial Math students who are underqualified to be quants but overlooked for other entry level jobs, etc. Am setting up thread for current students looking for jobs. boludo

Omar,One thought: It is the best timing to go back to school to learn a degree when market's bad. Who knows when recession will end ? I've heard the applications of PhD in QF program are very keen this year. It may be the result of economic recession.Jobseeker,China is now needing those who are strong in math finance. Have you tried there before ?

lol! I thought Sir Wilmott would've banished me for being frivolous. I'm in Chicago right now and am on the job search. It sucks big time!!!!! i don't know how it is in London, but in the US, it's been horrible, layoffs left right center! I'm currently interviewing with a few small boutique proprietary trading companies in Chicago, but no offer extended thus far .. *sigh* ..

So see guys ! The result is layoff, no job all over the world !!!!I don't believe China need quant person, they don't even allow people to play exotics. When exotics liquidity isnot high, then the demand for quant person is little. Same in HK.Now we need to help ourselves to get a job in this market. Everyday night and morning, I am searching the internet for jobs !!!!I don't let go any single chance. Although it has been very disappointing, I hope my spirit will land me a dream job (hopefullybefore all my money is spent and beg on the street)As a brownian motion, the expected time to find a quant job is infinitywhereas the probl. that finding a job approaches to 1My goodness .....Jobseeker

Boludo and co. - While it may not be exactly what you all are looking for - most credit card firms/fiannce companies (I work for one) are hiring quant folks at a good clip. In financial instititions most quants do some of the most interesting/involved with senior mangagement work. Just a thought - the flip side of the ABS's of the world. Ty

What a sad world!I'm finishing my last year of high school and I wanted to do a master degree in mathematical engineering. And then I wanted to work in finance.I was already thinking of my new house, new BMW, a lot of money and an intersting job,etc...But when I read your messages, I'm affraid for my future! Is the financial maths market so bad???Everywhere? If yes, maybe should I aim at another job...But you guys, who are qualified in maths. Why don't you get a job in biostatistics?Or actuarial science? I've heard that they were looking for people in these fields."Bonne chance" guys.

Hey guys:One thing that attracted me to the industry was the product variety. Not sure if this makes sense to any of you. But basically it was the products and the different stuff/bundles/packages that you could put together and make money .. that was fascinating for me, not necessarily the job function. I did an unpaid internship to figure out my direction in industry and it's been great. yeah it sucks that i'm putting in all this time and am not getting paid blahblah .. but it's great to have that experience on resume to talk about in industry. be resourceful i guess in looking for leads. boludo.

Have you realy thought of going through your CV again? It realy seems like you have to improve it! You know, the first person looking at your CV (administration) dont realy know much about the skills needed for a trader or a quant. Unfortunately they only tend to look "for the right words, schools, expressions" and so on. So, talk to an agent about what to do about it.about h

What a thread, it doesn't speak well for any education past the undergraduate level Am I really that bad or not suitable to this global market business ??? >>I am not an HR person, but then again for the kind of job you are looking for it's doubtful that HR would have any role in getting you the interview and they would have nothing to do with whether or not you are hired. If you want to get hired onto a trading desk you are certainly gunning for the bigtime, and I have to say that I admire that. Of course when you try and take it out of the park you tend to strike out a lot, it's just the nature of the beast. That being said here are my .02, take them with a grain of salt, as I am someone who knows nothing really about your position, personality or qualifications. If you are not even getting calls after you submit your resume the two main reasons that come to mind are 1) as goshawk had suggested you need to revamp your CV. 2) the jobs you are applying for are typically not ones that are filled by folks that submit resumes, the bulk of the interviews come from personal contacts and therefore they don't really even take time to look at a resume. If you are getting interviews but you aren't getting jobs one thing comes to my mind, personality. For a job as a trader compatability with your desk is paramount, followed closely by a good relationship with the sales desk and at a third that is a good relationship with the support people. The good rapport with support people is a lot more important than people think. I have heard of a guy getting marched out of an interview because he asked an admin to get him a drink, I think the inteviewer said something to the effect of go get it yourself, and don't bother coming back. The traders may heap abuse upon their support, but they certainly won't let you as an interviewee get away with it. It's kind of like the way one feels about one's little brother, it's okay for you to give him a hard time, but you'd jump on anyone else that did it. As for getting along with the traders there's really not a whole lot that can be taught on this subject. They like to work with people that are like them. If they don't think that you could be someone they'd be friends with, you're not getting hired. When you work in such close proximity to people for such a long day, day in day out, if someone bugs you it really puts a drag on the whole thing, and it's all about fun. Feel free to private message me if you need anymore help.
