LINUX 64

I'm starting to switch my SW development to LINUX 64. Anyone have any horror stories (like finding RAID drivers)?

Newton, we all know you're a foolBut that is even beyond your usual antics. You want UNIX and 64bit? Get an Apple for crying out loud. Seriously, get with the program.

You're an even bigger fool than I thought...Why don't you run Windows in OS X (Virtual PC) would that work?

Why don't you run Windows in OS X (Virtual PC) would that work? I'm sure running adaptive filters on my DSP (digial signal processor) subsystem on a virtual PC will give me a huge amount of time for .... GOLFYes -- (why do you think I'm going to 64 bits? - simply to avoid fp instructions)

If you are doing that then I don't really see how you could do anything but a G5.Faster, cheaper, UNIX, more scalable.... what more do you want?

FDAX,Question, on Mac OS X are you using a version of gcc 3.* which truly supports a (long long) implemented as a single 64-bit word, and 64-bit pointers? If so, then which Mac model should I look at for expansion beyond 2GB of RAM? Also, is there any utility for Mac OS X to make some memory avail as RAM Disk? (I try to avoid disk I/O when I can) I've been wondering about ramping up to an Athlon 64 or Opteron, running Suse or RedHat 3.*. I'm currently using Sun Ultrasparc III for 64-bit work, but want faster cpu and more development instances.
All standard disclaimers apply, and then some.

I have an Athlon 64 test server with SUSE 9.0 (64 bit Linux), Java 1.4.2 (64 bit), C++ and mySQL (64 bit). This configuration for DBs and digital filters looks pretty darn good to me. (I'm also really sick of .Net -- just give me XML over HTTPS please.)N

I'm planning on using a similar set-up for building software packages. What sort of performance increase do you get?I have heard you get 20% from moving from 32bit to 64bit; is this the case with say compiling Java code. I am also thinkingthat the HD may be a bottleneck; with this set up. What HD's are you running? (I was thinking of using Western Digitals 10KRaptor drives).

Until the 2.6.2 release of Linux, you'll need to stick with 15K WD SCSI drives. There currently isn't support for the much cheaper SATA Raptors.

A shame, but thanks for pointing this out. I think I will wait until Window XP for AMD64 ships, and Raptor driver are supported. And put two HD's in it, one for Linux and the other for Windows 64.I also like the fact with these machines that Gigabit LAN comes on some of the MBs.Also, waiting for some reliable benchmarks under Linux 64 and then Windows 64.
