The bribes issue is now pretty hot in Italy because of suspicions (currently under investigation) that the purchase of non-strategic 29% stake in Mr Milosevic's Telekom Serbia by state-owned Telecom Italia in 1997 for about 300 m. (pounds) may have been driven, rather than by economic logic, by the logic of "tangents" (bribes) of Mr Prodi's centre-left government of the day (although, he personally denies any involvement in the deal).Such suspicions, although perhaps impossible to prove, are obvious if one looks at the numbers:- 1997: 29% stake in TeleKom Serbia bought by state owned Telecom Italia for 300 million pounds.- 2002: 29% stake sold back to Serbian government for 100 million pounds.- "loss" of 200 million pounds.Clearly, being the Italian Treasury the majority shareholder of Telecom Italia at the time, then the Italian government of the day must have had some responsibility for such "waste" of Italian taxpayers' money. Also, if I remember correctly, half of 300 m. purchase price was paid cash. An airplane went to Serbia to deliver the money to a happy Milosevic.
