Best background for MSc in FE

I've always thought that one needed at least a strong bachelor/ master in math in order to be at ease doing a MSc in FE but I've seen that even econ majors could apply. So does it make a difference to have a strong math background or just your usual 3 calc classes will be enough?

One thing is applying another is getting accepted and being at ease.....on the other hand, i know econ majors in UK (at least from what I have seen) take linear algebra, year-long multivariable calculus and probability and statistics which almost amounts to a math minor in lots of schools in US.also, looking at curricula of various MSc FE/MathFinance/QuantFinance etc they seem to have quite different level of math exposure......

Know your freshman calc (that is what it is called in the US),linear algebra, calculus based probability and statistics(at the level of Degroot and Schervish),and you should be fine. If you take a course in real analysisthat would be extra but it will help you on the margin.Review some basic ODE's and PDE's and you'll be fine.
