Cafes / Bars for reading away in NYC

April 5th, 2004, 1:59 pm

This past year, I've fled to Europe three times to get out of the trading grind to sit out and catch up on my markets / math reading (while people watching) at bars / cafes. Favorite hangouts were the ones around St Germain De Pres in Paris, Piazza Navona in Rome and Piazza Della Republica in Florence.Anyone know of similar places where one can read for a few hours in NYC (especially around midtown and the village)?

Lord knows I've tried, but no. Actually, I can't believe there would be people going to Starbucks in London / Paris given what they have there.

For the east village, I like Des Moines on Ave. A and 3rd. On the other side of the town, I like Doma on Perry just off 7th Ave. You can also try DT UT in the east village as well. Theres always Dean & Delucas, BN, and Borders to hang out if you dislike Starbucks.
