FRM or PRM ?

April 23rd, 2004, 4:23 pm

I work in the insurance domain and was considering enhancing my skill set. Now the two options that i am really keen on are the FRM (Financial Risk Management) by GARP and the PRM (Professional Risk Management) by PRMIA. Could someone advice which of the two is more popular and holds greater standing in the market.....though FRM is more specialised, the PRM offers breadth as a consultancy profile...but this is just my assumption and anyway not much to make a decision on .Many thanks

FRM or PRM ?

thanks ppauperI am also inclined towards the PRM, but more so because it is more of a consultancy profile than the FRM which is much specialised......though the advantage of the FRM is that it is much more recognised globally and for me (I am in India) it would probably make more sense to do the FRM and then use that for a good job.....I was looking at it to substitute the need for a MBA or MSc in FIn Engwhat say you?

I am an FRM and was told after registering for the exam that the PRM designation was viewed by many in the industry to be superior. Their rationale was the difficulty of the test and gearing of the material. I certainly am not going to do the PRM now that I passed the FRM, but given that you have the choice to make, it might be better to choose PRMIA. I can say though that GARP has a great local chapter here in NYC which makes networking that much easier and keeps you sharper being in contact with other professionals looking to exchange ideas. Hope that helps.

It's a bit off-topic, but ppauper, seems like you are a CFA/PRM/ (MS or PhD?). That's quite a few qualifications. Can you give us some insights on how useful these designations are? I am a prospective MS student in financial math and I'm planning to write the CFA. Is it going to add value to my resume when I apply for quant jobs?
