Degree Equivalency in the US

April 29th, 2004, 3:13 am

I have a Mechanical Engineering degree from a European Institution that is heavily based in mathematics (many math and related courses). Can I ask for equivalency to a BSC in Math in the US?Any ideas about this? PS This is for the INS

To obtain a BS in Math in the U.S., the core requirements are:besides elementary CALC I, II, and III, and elementary differential equations:Advanced Calculus I and IIAbstract AlgebraProof Based Linear Algebra. The last four mentioned above are proof based and are very different from their prerequisites. So unless you have taken some courses that involve proofs, you cannot claim equivalence to a BSc in mathematics. Maybe you could claim equivalence to a BSc in applied math, which would include many of the similar courses that you probably took as an engineering major, almost all computationally based. I hope this helps.

They were proof based.A BSc in Applied Math equivalency will also do the job for me.Where can I go to ask for this evaluation?

Get an immigration attorney. I've dealt with the INS and I wouldn't do it any other way. You need to work with someone who knows what they're doing, who has the law down cold and who has plenty of experience. I worked with Lawler & Lawler (San Francisco, can't remember the number) who have done lots of degree equivalency work.

There is a huge book that contains all the different degrees from all the different universities in the world, and their equivalent US degree. I am not sure where to find it, but maybe ask some universities, or search online.
