How easy is finding part-time job in London?

May 28th, 2004, 7:18 am

Hi,I will be in London for full time study next year (courses mostly late afternoon) and I was wondering how easy it was to find a part time job. I would be able to work something like 7:30/8:00 to 13:30/14:00, so I do not know whether this is considered as a whole as appealing to companies. Any insight welcome.

Sounds like Birkbeck ?The jobs you can get for that pattern do not typically pay well, but they do exist. Many shops operate shift patterns, as do fast food joints. The market for this level is pretty healthy. If you have some IT skills, then EDS at ABN AMRO in London might want you. Their ideal employee is cheap, hasn't finished his education, and is finding it hard to decide between EDS and McDonalds.

Another option is to get yourself a spot as a junior excecution monkey at a systematic hedge fund that trades the asian markets. I know a few people who have done this - hours are pretty unruly and you may find yourself falling asleep in your lectures but you'll have deeper pockets than your fellow students.

Having worked at EDS would advise going for McDonalds :-) ....If you can't find industry work there are plenty of late night bars/clubs always looking for workers, this is how a number of people I know have supplemented income while doing a masters course...better tips and fun!!!

I shall have precised it seems... I was talking of trading floor based jobs obviously. The main thing is not money but rather acquiring some seniority...

Can you point me in the right direction, with names of firms I can contact. I am willing to work those awkward hours. I have some experience working at a futures trader in the past and currently work as an analyst in a finance company but really want to get into trading.
