You can find future symbols by using Bloomberg's FVD (fair-value detail) function. For example, DAX (index) FVD (go) will show you that GXU2 (commodity) (go) is the symbol for the DAX September future. The DAX, FTSE and Eurostoxx50 futures expire quarterly like the S&P500. The CAC expires montly at the end of the month (at least it used to).

I live in the UK If I were to wake up at noon I would look at the Dax and the miniS&P to see where the main markets were trading. For the techs I would look at the Nasdaq 100 future and Nokia (that won't help you much will it). Just reminded me of another exchange, the HEX, Finnish exchange, primary market for Nokia.Nig

I'm "living" in Japan - life here is Nikkei 225 and Topix dominated in the main. Nikkei for the dirty large cap direction - it's an unweighted, randomly constructed nightmare - and Topix to see what the "real" market is doing. Early morning though is dominated by Nasdaq and overnight yen moves, unless something really interesting is happening S&P futures or the 10s & 30s on Globex. Rest of Asia? Occasional interest at best, usually nothing more than an occasional conversation filler ("HK's down" - "yup, Kopsi too" - "Uh-huh. Hankyu Tigers lost again last night", etc)
