A good "gambling" book

December 23rd, 2004, 5:58 pm

What would be a good gambling book?*** By gambling I mean: "betting with a statistical edge" ***I would like at least some of the following included in the book:1. Types of gambling (trading, poker, horses, sports, what others??)2. A practical theory for improving my skill at each (I like the usual Skalnsky/Hellmuth/Malmuth treatises on poker and prefer any such types that are used by actual professional gamblers to general theories like game theory, etc.)3. Money mangement4. Statistics to measure my consistency and improvement.thanks!p

"fixed odds sports betting" by Joseph Buchdahl is pretty good.

I'm reading "Beat the Dealer" by Thorp about Blackjack.....but it may be some what outdatedActually, does anyone know if it is outdated or not? I have been using an abridged version of the complete point count strategy along with the basic strategy on YAHOO blackjack and have been making steady profits of about $20/hour of play with $1 minimum bets and a $10 multiple for each positive point count.

Thorp's book is ancient. Stanford Wong's book is THE book on BJ: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... &v=glanceI highly recommend it and can personally attest to its effectiveness. PS: If you want to play BJ, go to LV. AC rules SUCK!

If you are looking to be a complete player and have edges in every area, learn about microgestures, where the true emotions of persons are revealed for a few milliseconds before they are masked by others.A huge help in spotting bluffers. And if you can spot a bluffer (and learn to bluff better) it is a decisive edge. Learn to read the eyes and smell fear in your opponent. Wear dark sunglasses so your eyes cannot be read. There's a good starter book on this subject called Emotions Revealed by a fellow with a current multimillion dollar contract with the CIA using this for their interrogation of terror suspects, etc. It's at:http://tinyurl.com/6anpyThis should supplement your statistical prowess. After all, you want to maximize every possible advantage.Matthew

MAtthew, What are some good microg books/references? I tried Mike Caro and Howard lederer (both great poker players) books/CD's but they are ony alright...Now I am aware that these are only guidelines which may be right 60-70% of the time but still any other refernces on these may be helpful

Pusher-There's a good starter book on this subject called Emotions Revealed by a fellow with a current multimillion dollar contract with the CIA using this for their interrogation of terror suspects, etc. It's by Ekman and is called Emotions Revealed. It's at:http://tinyurl.com/6anpyIt's the best material out there that isn't classified. It's pretty new, late-breaking stuff. This title is by the author who started the field. There should be a companion DVD available very soon to help you practice. Also, last month's (or this month's) Cigar Afficionado had an extensive cover story on the subject. Great read!Matthew
