UK Business School reputation outside the UK

February 23rd, 2005, 9:07 am

I have heard that Cass Business School has been ranked second in the UK by the FT. But how about the rest of the world, I am sure they don't know?Does anyone know about how investment banks hiring in New York, Hongkong, etc. see it? I guess that LSE and Warwick would look much stronger than ICL or Cass to HR there. Am I just old-fashioned here?

Odd, but nearly always true. Universities that are named after places, Harvard, Cambrdige et al almost always enjoy a better reputation than those named after people or activities. My guess is that is makes them sound more "ancient" or established. This is not a judgement upon Cass vs London Business School, just a view on the market.

>> I have heard that Cass Business School has been ranked second in the UK by the FT. I dont think you have the story straight here. Cass (City Uni) is second for its Part Time programme only. The FT rankings are based mainly on salary for grads. Given that most PT students dont move the question becomes: Are you going to earn more in London or Coventry?

http://specials.ft.com/spdocs/top40euroschools.pdfThis is the link. It's MBA plus EMBA, but of course it reflects on the Bschool as a whole.I thought Warwick is perceived as stronger because it's research enjoys more limelight than ICL.I am not voicing my own opinion here, just pondering and reflecting biases I came across. The main question, however, is how those schools are seen outside the UK.

>> It's MBA plus EMBA, but of course it reflects on the Bschool as a wholeYes - It's the EMBA (mostly dont by part time workers from the City with nice high London Weighted salaries) that warps the figures here. It doesn't reflect the school as a whole - look at surveys in eg the Guardian or Times which include Undergrad or PhD Research and you get a hugely different ranking. Hence no LSE, poor showing for Aston and Lancaster etc - all of which do very well at the non Masters level.
