HEDGE FUNDS

very simple questioni'm looking for number of hedge funds and amount of assets for hedge fund universe.i've this quoted in bond market association, but they don't provide all the data to actually plot a charti checked bloomberg and they only have price indexes and return serieshedge fund research you have to pay for, same for ryan labsmoodys?any other suggestions....

Economist 17Feb05 edition has a 3 page article on hedge funds and has exactly the chart you are after (funds under managment annually from 1998 till 2004 from the hedge fund reserach source). If you can log onto there website look up http://www.economist.com/displaystory.c ... id=3666459

Start having a quick look at this article published on Bloomberg Markets magazine february 2005:"Hedge Funds grow up". Very interesting story and a couple of useful data too.Rgds,

there isn't really a reliable number to go by. If you compare HFR, Tremont, TASS, etc they all come up with different numbers. The reason is, a) not all hedge funds are listed with the research firms b) do you count the number of managers or actual funds c) there is a lot of inflation in the actual AUM numbers, through double counting, circular investments and hedge funds who are investing their assets in other hedge funds since they can deploy all the assets themselves.
