Whilst not a degree the diploma in maths and stats at the open university is very good and can lead onto a masters, many of the units are derived from their undergraduate course.

From a recruiters perspective, Birkbeck is generally thought of fairly highly.

May be worth checking out their website,http://www.business.city.ac.uk

Part-time maths degrees in London

August 3rd, 2002, 9:59 am

I am interested in doing a part-time degree in maths as well and checked the courses that have been suggested so far in this thread. It comes down to the external UoL External program (Goldsmiths College) and Birkbeck since I only want to take the course in London. I don't really now whether employers care that much about university rankings but Goldsmiths is only ranked 55 in the "Times Good University Guide" and 49 in the "Guardian". I am in a dilemma now because I find the curriculum of the Goldsmiths course suits me better than that of Birkbeck but it appears to me that Birkbeck has generally the higher reputation. Has anybody been accepted into one of those programs? If yes, what impressions have you got from the people there? At the end of the day, I want to increase my employability and I am therefore more concerned about the reputation of a university with top employers. My mid-term career goal is to set foot into a more quantitative job such as derivatives trading so I would be delighted to hear from experienced professionals what they think about my choice of universities. Btw, what is the reputation of part-time courses with employers anyway?Oh, almost forgot to mention the Open University. Is it well reputed in maths?svunt
