I get hits when I search for this about Bill Gates having announced its launch last week, but little other than this news tidbit. So is this the major new handheld OS after Windows PocketPC 2003, and how revolutionary is the jump supposed to be? Has anyone seen and used an actual gadget with this installed on it? I also heard this is supposed to have a new version of mobile office? Is this just hype, or a likely near-term palmOS-killer?

The change looks more evolutionary than revolutionary. Stability, security and performance were the primary motivator. Also developers now have access to API's governing the phone functions. For myself I like the integration with VS 2005 (due out at the end of the year) best. Integration with VS2003 was weak at best. Looks like VS2005 will ship with efficient integrated emulators so it should be like moving from a windows forms project to a web forms projects.
