Is there a way for MS Fin Math student?

May 26th, 2005, 10:02 pm

I'm a Fin Math master student in UK in a prestigious business school -- among those outside London. Finally finished with my coursework and preparing for dissertation , it's about the time to think about career. I don't plan to go for PhD at the moment, and as everyone knows 9 out of 10 quant jobs require a PhD (and the last one just don't bother to put it explicitly). I would like to seek for a career which would apply the fin eng skills i learn this year. So my question is whether there exist such jobs which has a quantitative element but don't require a PhD.I'm basically an ordinary master student, maybe top 1/3 of the class but surely not the top few. I'm from East Asia and you can probably see my English is only at daily communication level. I'll need a work permit to work in EU.So can anyone give me a starting point for job search on some semi-quantitative positions or fields? I'll appreciate also if you let me know I'm asking the wrong question or thinking in a wrong way. Thanks very much

Check out agencies and banks such as HSBC and Barclays for jobs. Speak to agents and HR at banks. Go for a few trial interviews in finance. Work in bank for couple of years. Decide whether want to continue working or do PhD in quant finance.

Search on "finance". Speak to recruitment agent - he/she will soon put you right.

Go work in Hong Kong or Japan then, since you are from far east . Your degree might worth more in Asia than UK or US
