Question about job choice in Paris

QuoteOriginally posted by: Aytek(and beeing 21 I dont plan to marry in a 5 year horison so have time for a phd actually)))))))))))))))))))I got married at 23, and I was still an MSc student. Currently a PhD student. Life is easier if you marry the right person. When I was 18, I used to say that I would never marry. At 19, I met my current wife and I changed my opinion about marriage almost immediately. So who knows ? You might change your mind tomorrow too.Quotehaha thanks for advise you have actually depressed me a bit i dont drive so couldnt use my sport car )))I don't care about sport cars, and it is good that you don't, because with your salary in Paris it would take a long time. And really a waste given the traffic in Paris. the Metro is way better.Quotelats question if you have time: asset liability management advisory and structuring in an I bank VERSUS quant synthetic CDOs and credit in general in an AM , both in Paris ? none of the two is really QUant as CDOs in asset management are not really quant stuff. Different if you were to do it in IB. So better go for structuring, it is not real quant either, but might be closer.

Question about job choice in Paris

QuoteOriginally posted by: Sofiane Hey Aytek, here people think that a real quant (in terms of virility) should not waste its time doing a phd. Doctoral studies have no value for banks, the optimal degree is the master, each additional year of study is a negative return, all the more if you have some publications ! I hope i'm not depressing you, get a job, get married and rich, buy a sport car and be happy !Undegrad studies are already sooo long in France. I guess banks expect you to be willing to work after all these years. If you want to do a PhD, its considered as an indication that you want to stay in academia.Aytek, you're young so it might not be such a concern, even in France.Anyway, the PhD is in the UK, so you'll have no problem finding a job in London.

Well I did a phd but forgot to marry and buy a sport car Amercian usually say : you earn money in the US and come spend it in Paris, note that the reverse is more complicated BUT if you like writing a paper in august for meeting the deadline of a call for paper instead of being in a sunny country, it a honest, but rememer Morgensternn-von Neuman theory : Maximize your utility !

Remember the Herrick theory: Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be dying. Maximise eveything else than your utility. you are 21 so stop thinking too hard, go for a Phd if you are not really sure of what you want to do. On top of that Phds leave you quite some spare time to sink in London's dodgy nights.Sofiane the reverse is possible, hard undoubtly but still possible

Aytek,If you are 21 but don't have a Masters already you should get one. Once you've started driving the sport car you won't want to go back to studies...

I think after PhD you can either stay in academia or still move into industry, so go for PhD.
