Finance Societies at University

Most Unis have some sort of club for those who want to go into banking. However, the impression I get is that they are mostly for those who going into sales, accountancy and mainstream IT.Do there exist many outfits who have an interest in quant work, get in speakers, share thoughts on job hunting, arrange trips to banks that sort of thing ?If not, why not ?

For us, we don't because the program is small, 20 ppl or so.. and we all gear towards quant work.. so I don't see the need for a club to 'gather these ppl'On the other hand, our director of the program is the one who invites industry people to come and talk, that sort of things.

now why would a headhunter want to know that ?Well, yes.I don't pretend to have a perfect model of the situation, but it's clear from talking to people that whereas some course directors build good relationships with the industry, some people get little contact until they are faced with actively getting a job. In particular , it's hard for someone choosing a course to work out it's relevancy. People doing clearly related subjects are supported far better than those doing physics and maths, yet it is often those disciplines that lead to quant work. Also HR people who are involved with a lot of grad/PhD recruitment, as well as the business simply cannot have the time to visit many institutions and of course many good places are quite a distance from the finance centres. It's possible that this can be made a little better, have some thioughts on this, interested to hear others.

Just realised that I posted in a PM instead of here.I was very much involved in a society in Lund, Sweden, where I was studying economics. We ran our own Bloomberg + about 10 Reuters terminals. We got the BB in 1991 and we were apparently the first non-financial organisation in the world to have the terminal. For those who remember , it looked quite user hostile. We invited guest speakers like the chief economista of the banks and also made a trip to London once a year.It was a couple of years ago when finance was less quant than present day. I think that the people with the quant skills at university don't think about a banking carreer in the same way as the business students, who from the first lesson are wannabe CEOs and investmentbankers.I got my first job through this while begging a bank for partnership, without applying and without even having begun to write my thesis.Just my ideas.
