Hi, Guys:I am planning to appy for PhD in Finance. How good should my GRE or GMAT score be?As for myself, I just got my M.S. in Financial Engineering and M.S.in Applied Statistics(double major). and my background is computer science.I took GRE three years ago, which was o.k. but not good. My score was 2030. (to be honesty, I hate english exam. )One of my friend told me I should got much higher GRE or GMAT score in order to get into the top schools.is it right? How seriously do those schools care about GRE or GMAT? can somebody give me some information?Thanks a lot.by the way, I am in U.S. now.

your friend is right, GMAT is prefered and you should get more than 700 to be a strong candidate

I have a feeling that most PhD programs in Finance require to take GRE test (GMAT is mostly intended for MBA programs), but check out their web sites. They do care about GRE scores. Needless to say you have to get 780-800 in math section.

Most places offering a PhD in Finance accept either GMAT or GRE. I think UChicago is the only place that prefers GRE over GMAT but even they will accept GMAT scores. Having no experiece with GRE scores I cannot really rank your performance - I was under the impression that GRE was out of 800. If you are planing on taking the GMAT you should be thinking of scoring around 700 out of 800 to place competitively.
