rajagopalp,Exams, oriented more to statistics than to stochastic processes, are offered by the Royal Statistical Society. They can be a worthwhile replacement for a degree in statistics.Check this linkThe Royal Statistical Society Examinations

What is the reputation and usefulness of the FRM? Is it used primarily by risk managers at banks or is it used by traders as well?

Traders still tend tend to lack academic degrees.

I think that's very dependent upon the firm they may be working at, the area they work within, and the specific functions they undertake. I was working at a big I-Bank about five years ago (both in NYC and London) focusing on market-making for derivatives and managing risks associated with large structured deals we dropped into our books, and many of my fellow traders had at least master's degrees in various quantitative subjects - if not PhD's. I was more of the odd-man-out for not having one myself (at that time )......
