Hi All, I'm half way through my PhD (physics), which I really enjoy. After this a Quant role looks very appealing and I'm pretty sure it's what I'll be aiming to do. So like thousands of others I spend a lilltle time making sure my skillset is OK, and that my interests are truly congruent with QF. However, there are two things that really bother me. 1)How do any PhD students take 12 weeks off for an Intership (EPSR/PPARC only alllow for 8 weeks for example)?2)With several firms now offering a dedicated recruitment stream for PhD associates, how does this tie in with the perils of writing up?!?!?I can deal with 2, I'm happy to spend a year or so after my PhD doing some freebie work reading beyonf hull but, when I chat to HR they don't seem to realise that research students don't typically get holiday (this is all in the UK by the way).So, realistically - if my knowledge is up to speed should I worry?Hens

Agree, in UK, PhDs have no holidays, the only way you could take up both is change your PhD into PT, if it is allowed. I am 99% sure that if you are funded by EPSRC, they won't allow you do that. However, I think the key point is your supervisor, if he/she doesn't mind then goes!!!!!It's true, one of my colleague take up associate in DB last year, now he is enjoying his good salary and PT PhD. What puzzled me is recently I read FT, it is said in now days London City is better than NY Wall St. especially on Financial Innovation, and the average age is 25!!!!!!!!!! I am not sure if it is true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But really disappointed........I am nearly 25, and in Yr2 PhD.....Any chances left????????????????????

{What puzzled me is recently I read FT, it is said in now days London City is better than NY Wall St. especially on Financial Innovation, and the average age is 25 }which date's FT did you read? IB is not like an escort service agency prefering young people.
