Quant Analyst vs. Associate

October 22nd, 2005, 12:59 pm

Sat Oct 22, 05 04:23 AM <No one replied my post in the career forum, so writing in here again>What is the difference between a Quantitative analyst versus quantitative associate. I am sort of new to finacne but as much as I have seen, Associates are higher then analysts. Or does it imply that someone who will be just aiding in research like making graphs, presentations, testing hypothesis, back testing and proposing any ideas on his own? Please correct me if I am wrong. If some one would want to be a core quant, and is already in quant analyst kind position then is an associate level better or more like sideline business? Please answer.

Associate is the next step above analyst. It's just a level to say that you've done a few years and know more than the graduate analyst in the same division. You get a payrise but the work doesn't usually change that much.

crisky is right. Usually, in banks, the next level after associate is VP.

Quant Analyst vs. Associate

While practices differ among firms, there are often two kinds of analyst. One is the entry level professional position, one step below associate, as has been mentioned. The other is part of an extensive training program. Typically these are two year positions, after which most people leave to go back to school. Often they involve rotation among departments. These used to be the most common positions for people right out of college, but are becoming rarer.
