QuotePut your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.

"All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom."

I am surprised participants of the Wilmott Forum have not posted the most obvious one for the tangent portfolio of Einstein's and our interests:Quote"[Compound interest] is the greatest mathematical discovery of all time" and also Quote"Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing." And for me and Hamilton:Quote"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."from Science, Philosophy and Religion: a Symposium (1941) ch. 13

How about the most memorable movie protrayals of Einstein? I vote for:Insignificance (1985, Michael Emil)The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951, Sam Jaffe, although the character is named "Professor Jacob Barnhardt," he is clearly intended to be Einstein)I. Q. (1994, Walter Matthau)Some of these quotes sound more like lines from the movies than things Einstein would have said.

Apologies, my previous post was not quite on-topic (could hardly be categorized as 'surprising' AE quotes) -- let me try again:"An empty stomach is not a good political adviser. ""I made one great mistake in my life-when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made but there was some justification-the danger that the Germans would make them."

My favorite Einstein quote (in back translation from Russian)"The big problems that we face can not be resolved using the same trail of thought that was used to create them."If anyone can tell me the original phrase English, I'd appreciate.

One of Albert Einstein's more famous sayings in the New York Times, July 8, 1921:"American men, though they are hardworking, are nothing more than toy dogs of the women, who like to spend money...and wrap themselves in a veil of excess,"PS: this is not my words, I am simply giving you a quotation from the master himself.

An e-mail exchange with Aaron just reminded me of a quote that goes something like...Anonymous mathematician: "Professor Einstein, I keep a notebook and pencil with me all the time in case I have a good idea"AE: "You have that many good ideas?"
