Bloomberg TradeBook is registered as a broker with the SEC. BondTrader offers an equivalent service for Fixed income, and they launched something similar for derivatives about two months ago.

If you are thinking about quantitative research, remember Peter Carr, Bruno Dupire and Patrick Hagan are there. If you are thinking about trading or other operations, I don't know.

Hi, Im a headhunter, Re: Bloomberg, as a work place it has not had the best reputation in the past but alot of that has changed. It is a very open kind of place which some peoplelike and some don't. A problem is that alot of talented Programmers leave because they are really not challenged there. As a quant, Bloomberg won't necessarily be the brightest star on your resume, regardless of famous quants that consult there. email me if you would like to discuss some opportunites at a Bank or Fund. asmith@optionsgroup.com

Some people come in this forum with a sense of despair and foreboding about the hours and lifestyle they will have to keep up when they get a job. I get the idea that working at Bloomberg is more relaxed. If you are a smart, personable, and creative person, then your salary your first year out of college isn't how much money you will make, it's how much money you'll make your first year out of college. Get into the industry, get into the city, get into the scene, and who knows what you'll end up doing. No job is a life sentence. Who you are is a life sentence. If you are more suited to something going on at a hedge fund, you'll probably end up there.

The important thing to keep in mind is that just because everyone in NY has a Bloomberg does not mean that working at Bloomberg is unambiguously highly rewarded by the marketplace. The rewards, as always, come from the types of work you do. And Bloomberg does have a nice little area of quant research that may be worth looking at. But the lion's share of the jobs are data entry and call center

thanks for the repliesi am a fresh cs phd, just got an offer from bloomberg as a developer. i am not sure this is the best way to go, it seems i have no chance to touch quant or finance stuff. some recruiters are looking around for me, but it seems bank or fund doesn't like un-experienced cs guys

i am not sure this is the best way to go, it seems i have no chance to touch quant or finance stuff. Then you need to know what you're working on. Some non-quant BB stuff is good experience, however they need to babysit a huge pile of old buggy shit. Also like any company they have a lot of code that is what I characterist as "housekeeping" writing routines to ingest data, converting from one form to another, billing clients. The % of portable and useful skills in this can be low. However BB is doing some vaguely interesting stuff in online trading, and if you're involved in the ongoing attempt to transform their data transmission setup from toxic waste, in a couple of years you'll be worth money. You have a private message...

The "standard" hours at Bloomberg are 8am to 6pm which in the UK are very long hours. Bad enough the financial sector has already added one hour to the working day without them adding a second one. If you like being married to your work then that's fine but if you want to have a life and spend some time with your family then avoid it. I would never be able to maintain a job on those hours so I regularly turn them down.

I work in London and my work hours are 8.30-18.00, incl. the lunch break. And it's not an IBank, I heard that working hours in London branch of GS are even longer. The thing is, you rarely need to provide maximum output all the time during this hours. I always have time to call my wife, chat about what's going on, eat lunch, go for a coffee. Many companies will not mandate long hours officially, but you will end up working a lot anyway, because of the inner need to deliver results on time and of high quality.

Bjorn Flesaker has moved to Head Fixed Income Quant at Prudential Financial [per LinkEdIn page].With Peter Carr moving to Morgan Stanley, I woner if Bloomberg is changing their quant interest or if both just got very good offers.
