Depending on the type of job, the role could be very specialized (such as quant) or it could be broad. e.g. there are securitization groups that just buy mortgages, securitize and sell them. On the other hand, banks have mortgage trading groups where they don't only securitize and sell, but also hedge against positions in mortgage books (hence trading). Moreover, trading MBS is kind of like trading fixed income structured products....All in all, it's certainly a good area to work in but exposure to markets and career potential depend on the kind of job you take and exposure of the MBS/ABS department itself to other groups in the bank.
