Quant opportunities in Canada

In Montreal, opportunities are very scarce. I heard that only 3 companies have quant-type jobs: Banque Nationale, Desjardins Securities and Caisse et Depot du Quebec. Being in a quant finance program in Montreal, I'm very distressed by the paucity of jobs here. I suppose Toronto would be a safer bet to land a quant job.

Hi - I am a headhunter and coincidentally also Canadian (although I have only worked over here in London). There are several banks that have good quant groups in Toronto: RBS has a strong quant group, so should Bank of Montreal. Some of the risk consultancies do the majority of their hard-core modelling in Canada, specifically Algorithmics. I think you are definitely right that Toronto is a better bet for jobs.

you could try a canadian headhunter. You'd think that given that the Montreal exchange is where derivatives are traded, there would be more in Montreal>>Being in a quant finance program in Montreal, I'm very distressed by the paucity of jobs here. The profs in that program would be the guys who know, and if they say there's nothing, chances are they're correct

By the way, I've always been told that I shouldn't send my CV to a lot of HH, I should pick one and stick with it (Is this true?).... But then how do I know the one I pick is any good to start off? Especially I only know one in Canada.. (thanks to ppauper below)

Ontario vs Québec. I guess Toronto acts as New York and Montréal as Chicago.
