Anyone done/doing KCL Fin Math (pt)?

September 9th, 2006, 3:43 pm

I would be interested in your account of what is/was like. What kind of doors (if any) did it open for you. What was your background before starting it. Did it it kill you to do it? I'm going to decide whether to do it. Would be grateful for any advice I can get. Thanks Lyte Saber

Do you already have an offer to start later this month, or are you planning on applying to start in autumn 2007 ?You may wish to know that KCL Maths Dept have just updated their website - although changes are not always that apparent. The major changes are that Dr Zervos has been offered a chair (i.e. becomes a professor) at the LSE, and is therefore leaving KCL.The modules offered for the maths course are thus changing - the FM11 course on martingales is not being offered in 2006-07, but a new FM13 (Computational Finance) course, probably taught by Prof Shaw, is being offered in its place. And no, I don't know what happened to FM12 If you're planning on applying to start in Sept 2007, you may wish to go to the open day that KCL Maths hold every year around February. I know you're asking about part-time, but you can also turn up to one or more of the Tuesday late afternoon seminars - should be plenty of full-time current students who you can talk to afterwards to get an insider's view.

Thanks! I was going to apply this year but someone I knew who did it said a) the lectures start at 5 b) some of them are in the afternoonc) tutorials are in the afternoonwhich is really no good to me. I don't know why they don't make them more amenable to people who are actually working city jobs. I am trying Birkbeck.

Have a look at the maths department website - they've posted full details of all lecture times there for the 2006/07 year

Birkbeck and the Wilmott CQF are specifically designed for people with jobs. No, I don't know why anyone has a part time masters in finance that makes having a job almost impossible.
