GRE quant score - help interpretation

December 4th, 2002, 11:09 am

Dear All,I downloaded the GRE powerprep, and just to see my level I tried the test and I scored 750 in Quant and 550 in Verb.Verb is ok, I am not american.I thought that quant was good, but then I went to see the scores report that you find in the same software and I realised that (for people that want to study finance) if you get 800 the percentile is only 86 and with 750 the percentile is 64. If you look at the report for all the test takers you have that with 800 the percentile is 97 and with 750 the percentile is 90.My problem is that if I compare my score with future finance student it is crappy, if I compare with all the students my score is not too bad. Here my question: what graduate schools do, do they compare with all the students or only with the one that intend to study in finance. In a few words, is my quant score good or not for a schools like Stanford or similar?Any opinion and clarification is well accepted. (Note I compared with master students, with PHD or all is even worse)Plus, can anyone help me explaianing why quant GMAT is 3 times more difficult than quant GRE ?Bye

GRE quant score - help interpretation

ETF,They compare your scores to the other applicants in your program. But they don't look at your scores in isolation, they look at the whole package. GRE scores really aren't that important. However your 750 quant score will definitely be below average for top tier masters programs. At my MFE program the median quant score is 800 and I think it is similar elsewhere (I don't know the mean). If you have a good head for numbers getting an 800 is really not very hard; just practice. And even if you screw up and get below 800 don't worry. GRE scores are getting less and less important. GRE scores are probably the least important part of your application. I think people know that GRE scores don't really measure aptitude, they are just used as an objective measure to check the rest of your more subjective qualifications against. As long as your GRE scores are not completely different from you grades etc., you'll be fine.
