Isn't the long hours a myth? Even as a trading desk quant, the markets open at 7:50am and ends at 4:30pm. Considering you are not even a trader, you don't even need to be there so early. There's no reason to be there much later than 5:30pm everyday.

Depends what products you're involved with. If it's anything exotic or over the counter, traders may be worrying about their numbers late into the night and expect you to be there with them. At the other extreme if its something very liquid that trades in multiple markets around the world then local market hours may not do you much good either.I don't know any quants where I work (large IB) who leave at 5:30 except on special occasions like being extremely ill, but no doubt this also varies with employer.

QuoteOriginally posted by: snowdewa while back I had an interview with a head of a team at an energy company who appeared rather eccentric. He said culture in his office is similar to academic environment where people are not committed to certain starting time, have XBox to play at will (provided by him), even a room to watch DVD together or read books if they find their minds are blocked. More so, he spent the whole 'interview' lunch talking about our shared interest in astronomy, the observatories in our state and how to get into their fields for a look. in my experience, such a great work environment has its price: the job probably doesn't pay as well as one where the boss is a jerk and you are staring at a cube for 12 hours a day.

I am not worried about earning a low salary, i just want to work in the field. Please let me know about companies where there is a good work/life balance.ThanksHow many hours a week you would find acceptable?

Thank you. I will look at Barra. Is it true that quant analyst at Hedge funds (with two years of experience) have short work hours (8hours / day). Thats another one i think i am going to look at. Theres, of course, Fannie Mae.Thanks.

Do avoid the start-ups though, I hear they work non-stop.
