MFE: what levels are people hired at?

May 23rd, 2007, 5:37 pm

Hello folksThis is my first post on this forum. Could anyone shed light as to what positions do people get hired at after one of the top notch MFE programs such as at UCB? Also, does it make sense to do an MFE after an MBA and if so is it possible to get into senior trading roles?Lastly, do PE and hedge funds also recruit or value MFE degrees? Thanks

I would imagine one needs a lot of TRADING experience to get a SENIOR trading role. A junior trading role is a possiblity, but difficult, as it is for everyone. Hedge funds could be interested depending on previous experience. As for PE, perhaps lotto tickets are a better investment.

You almost certainly won't be going from an MFE directly into a SENIOR trading role... or with any degree for that matter. I don't think it really matters whether you do a top notch MFE or not, with regards to where you will start on the trading ladder (obviously a top notch degree will improve your chances of being hired, but it won't let you just skip straight into a senior role ahead of someone else who did an MFE at a 'lesser' uni). Experience and a good P&L history will no doubt be of FAR more relevant for senior trading roles than any amount of degrees. As Martingale inferred, consider yourself lucky if you get a junior trading role.

even if you did a "top notch" medical degree or two you probably wouldn't expect to come straight out & get hired as a consultant neurological surgeon...

Berkeley is one of the top MFE programs, isn't it?Junior trading: Very likely with persistence. You won't be making trading decisions in your first few months, but you can certainly get a "trading-track" job. Senior trading: Nigh impossible, since this requires trading experience, which you don't have. You don't know anything about trading until you've either done it or watched people do it. PE? No. Do you know what PE is? My feeling is that you're asking about it just because you've heard that it's a good place to be, but... if you're the MFE type, you probably won't like the work PE has to offer. It's much more like corporate finance than trading/quant work. Hedge funds? Yes.
