Normal Distribution Question

The standard normal distribution has mean 0 and standard deviation 1. A normal distribution in general can have any mean and standard deviation but it can always be transformed into a standard normal by subtracting the mean and dividing by the st. dev. So if we want to do calculations it suffices to know how to handle the standard normal case.

Normal Distribution Question

Hmm... I think what black sheep is trying to say is that normal distribution does not necessarily have a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1. For eg, height is normally distributed but does not have mean 0 ! Those parameters ( 0 and 1 ) you were talking about refers to the standard normal distribution.Since it is easy to transform any normal distribution into a standard one (by the method black sheep described), out of convenience we use 0 and 1, to make the job of the guys tabulating the normal tables easier. You need to integrate a rather scary-looking function to get those values you see in the table... so if you look at how those values are calculated, you'd understand why this decision was made! =O (Bearing in mind that this was done in the 17th Century)

QuoteOriginally posted by: ninadchavda1Can some one elaborate on why Standard Normal distribution is having Mean of 0 and Std deviation of 1 ?the simple answer is that because whoever called this thing "standard" chose its parameters so that mean and std were 0 and 1. it's very convinient in many cases.
