UK tax rules for PT education?

September 28th, 2007, 6:58 am

Are tuition fees for part time higher education treated as a benefit in kind, i.e. taxable?I presume not, in which case (ignoring issues with timing of cash flows) a UK student financing his own part time education would gain 40% of whatever amount he could convince his employer to pay directly to the university & deduct from his bonus.Am I right?

Disclaimer : I am not a tax lawyer. It's training, not education, and as such is perfectly tax deductable, but as long as you not related to the directors, it's fine. However the exact mechanism you suggest is not on at all.You can come up with an informal deal with your boss, but accounts won't like it at all.

If you are employed (as opposed to self-employed) you can only get tax relief for anything that is necessary to do your job, and anyone doing your job would normally incur, expenses that put you in a position to do your job are not allowed. Your employer can pay the fees directly, and this is usually tax efficient since training is tax-deductible for them.
