I'd will be working on Tooley Street -- what are would you recommend to look for a studio/1 bedroom flat?Angel - good bars, restaurants etc.. + close to the city - could get yourself a reasonable studio for just over 200 per week overground train from Essex Road then change at Old Street and you'll be at London Bridge in about 15 mins (or you could go direct if you're next to Angel tube)

You will get a place there for £1,000 a month without too much problem. Thanks NJ. Is Rotherhithe/Canada Water a good idea for someone working near the Russel Square station?NoDon't bother living there unless you work there IMO

Can I get a decent place for 1500 there? What are the other possibilities? Angel, as people suggest, might be dangerous.Hyde Park is expensive.

The most important factor is transportation. The less time you spend on it, the better! You don't want to be clamped up against the door of the underground for 40 minutes every single day in 45 degree heat in the summer. Also, you need to look for places with a back-up, so that if one station/train line shuts down, what's the next alternative. It happens a lot.

Angel isn't dangerous - if you're worried about crime in London then just don't go to south east London.Islington is a very diverse borough but areas such as Angel, Barnsbury and Clerkenwell are fairly decent. Tony Blair was a resident before he became prime minister so I'm sure you'll be fine.

Actually, no, not great for there. That is actually a tricky place to get to from the normal city-type places.Barbican works, but you actually have lots and lots of places reasonably local to it that the college (University college) use.To save money, though, it always makes sense to travel out on the direct tube line that goes to your station. I am afraid that I am struggling, though, as you have picked one place in Central London that has no clear commuter place that I can think of. Best will be Campden/Chalk Fram, from which yo get the Norther line to Tottenham Court Road, then walk.

The advice thatyou shoudl only live there if you work there makes no sense, as most of my juniors live there, yet there are no banks there at all.And your blanket statement that South East London is dangerous is just asinine. I live in Blackheath, which is a beautiful village, and one of the nicest places in London. Greenwich has some beautiful places too, especially round the market.

http://www.upmystreet.com/local/police- ... 733.htmlIt seems that the statistics show that any area in central London is pretty dangerous. I'd just stick to Bexley ;-)

Thanks everyone for their comments. I am currently considering Aldgate, Aldgate East. I am getting nice apartments for 1500 pounds, everything inclusive. It is about 10 minutes to Blackfriar's by train, which is a 5 min walk from work. What do people think of the area?

Aldgate is not a bad area, though it is close to some less attractive ones. It is in no way fashionable, but that makes it rather better value. It is a "busy" area, and that includes weekends. If you are going to Fleet Street or St. Pauls then on a warm day it will be more attractive to walk to work.

I will be going to Fleet Street. Is biking to work a possibility?

Yeah, I always thought Aldgate was a bit rough, but it is in a very good location. What floor is the flat on? I wouldn't go for something on the ground floor, unless it is very well portered.
