Bear Stearns/CALYON

March 11th, 2008, 5:52 pm

Hi,I may have a proposition for an internship in CALYON quantitative research based in Paris. I also have discussions with FI in Bear Stearns London. I was wondering what would be the best choice to start my career taking into account various aspects : reputation, salary, competences...Moreover, does anybody know how the recent events affected Bear Stearns and if it is still a good company to work on ?Thanks in advance for the responses,

I wouldn't touch Bear Stearns with a barge pole, irrespective of current market rumour. Go to Calyon, do your two years underpaid in France, then move to the UK and get your big uptick.

In a general way, how do you see CALyon compared to other French bank : BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Natixis but also to US and UK banks : Barclays, JPMorgan, GS, ML, CS, DB, BS etc.Does it sound to you like a good company and a good way to start a quantitative career ?In fact, I think it is difficult to have a objective opinion on french banks when you are french yourself (like me)...

These days as a general rule, it would be preferable to avoid pure investment banks only, and go for a IB within a diversified group, like Calyon-Credit Agricole. It would be such a waste to start your carrer in a bank, and find it in a serious trouble after some months.however, Calyon has a good reputation in terms of salary/bonus, good level because of the french schools, and a positive ambiance to work.
