Opinions on Canary Wharf area ?

July 25th, 2008, 10:06 am

I am probably moving to London in September so I have to find an accomodation there. At the moment I am considering flats near Canary Wharf (near to work).Anyone wants to share his/her experience regarding this location? I am particularly interested in your opinion on this place vs other nice locations in central london...Thanks in advance!

Do you like commuting? If not, CW is a little boring in terms of life after work.

Canary Wharf absolutely blows in terms of life after work. I'm sure there's a nice corner or two in there somewhere, but nothing comparable to east London eg Shoreditch, Hoxton, etc. There's a straight DLR train from Bank station in the City to Canary Wharf, about 10 mins to get there. If I was you, I'd look for something near to the DLR stations in London (Bank and the next 2 or 3, look it up).

I would agree with TJ and Zmei, life sucks in Canary Wharf (do you really want to spend your weekend in a dead place).I would also add Angel to the Zmei list. It is a bit further north than Hoxton but it is a really cool and fun area.

You might not want to live in Shoreditch or Hoxton, though, as it might not quite exactly be your cup of tea (a bit too cutting-edge and fun for yours truly, I'm afraid). Angel/Islington is pretty cool, though, definitely.

Agreed--Canary Wharf is NOT fun to live in.In addition to the DLR connection, you can also look for places along the Jubilee Line (London Bridge, Southwark, Waterloo, Westminster). It's about a 10 minute train from London Bridge, and that's a much cooler area than Canary Wharf. On a related note, Canada Water sucks out loud. Remember, there is always a reason that an area is cheap.

A little further afield but still commutable, you could try Greenwich, Knightsbridge or Fulham.

Also, if you're willing to go in the Greenwich direction, look at Blackheath.

Thank you very much for all the suggestions! My idea was to save time during the working days by finding a flat 15 minutes away from work (by walk). Then I would take the tube to spend time in "more fun" areas in central London during the weekend. But if I have to take the tube anyway to go anywhere else apart from the IB then I am not sure it is a good idea...I think that I should spend a couple of days in these areas to see which one I prefer...the list is already long I can cope with some commuting but I would like to avoid 30minutes or more (one way) in a crowded tube every day...Is the DLR (of which I ignored the existence, shame on me ) less crowded then the Jubilee line?I strongly prefer places which are not dangerous, and possibily with "nice" people. Any suggestion about places that I should avoid? If I decide to have a look to CW anyway (to compare) which one is the nicest place to see to look for a flat?Thank you again.

I have been living in Canary Wharf for a couple of years now and absolutely love it. Even as far as weekend activities are concerned, it just keeps getting better and better. Loads of shops, restaurants etc. You need one visit over a weekend to say, the main canary wharf shopping complex to see how alive it is over the weekend. O2 arena is great as well. I have lived in Tottenhan Court Road as well, so can compare the city to CW. Another big advantage is that you get luxury, modern flats in canary wharf (with concierge & leisure facilities), hate the old look of flats in other areas.

Well, tube in London is horrible, all the delays. I'd never want to commute to work in the morning That's why I'm renting 2minutes walking distance to Canary Wharf(south quay dlr), it's not like you have time to go anywhere during the weekdays, and during weekends you'll end up taking the tube anyway. That said, the areas around Canary Wharf are all pretty dodgy(avoid Limehouse and Canning Town lol). Yeah, and concierge and lesiure facilites and just the facts that all flats are new is pretty cool. Well, I haven't been living in CW for long yet, so I'll see what happens in a year or so DLR used to be pretty fast but there is now reconstruction and extension going on everywhere so on weekends part of DLR is closed(Jubilee is closed from Green Park to stratford, sic!)

Is there any area in (near) CW that you particularly suggest?

Can you get a lap dance on the Isle of Dogges? Maybe I should open up a joint.
