Real money

I dunno how much is in topic because probably it is not the typical quant job.I have opportunities in a large asset management (in HF jargon, "real money"). I was told that econometrics will be an important part of the job.I am a PhD in physics and I like programming so when I started approaching finance, without knowing anything of financial industry I considered quant as the natural career path. The world of investment and trading strategies has really conquered me and I'd like to know what kind of careers paths are possible. In particular I was told that what you learn and do in a regular (real money) asset management is worth also in the long/short and macro hedge fund industries.
