1st contact after interview! be pro-active or not?

November 20th, 2008, 2:41 pm

Hi,i recently interviewed with a trading desk. Much of it went smooth, but the guys were really smart and immidiately realized when i was imprecise or simply bullshitting cause i had no clue how to answer their questions. Then they would focus exclusively on this topic and pull me apart like warm bread. ;-) Completely legitimate but not too much fun for the interviewee. Now some of the guys gave me their business cards, some not. I understand that all of them work at the same desk and i basically talked to everybody. Now I'd like to give some sort of proactive feedback à la "thanks for inviting me and i know there lots of stuff i dont know, but i'd really work hard even in my freetime to learn that stuff". But should I? I don't want that to seem like a lame suck-up move. And I'm unsure whom of the guys i should email. All of them? just the 'highest ranking' guy? Should I even email at all?-CM

There are three scenarios WRT being in the money with three respective recommendations:1. ITM: "You got the job": Don't email because no good can come of it.2. ATM: "You might get the job": Email with thoughtful answers to the questions you couldn't answer. Show you can learn rather than just say you can learn.3. OTM: "You're not in the running": Email to get feedback on the interview to learn from your mistakes. For example, ask if they would have thought better of you if you had simply admitted ignorance rather than trying BS?I would not email everyone -- that's spam and likely to piss them off. If you craft clever answer(s) to their question(s), email it to the respective asker(s). If you want feedback, email the friendliest guy first, wait a few days, then try someone else.

Can you give more details as regards specifics ? "recently" can mean different timescales for different people and would help specify which ITM,ATM,OTM category alpha referred to. Also what are your qualifications ? BSc, MSc, PhD ? Is it a lateral hire ?If not lateral, was is direct hire on desk or grad role on trading scheme or what ? these all have an impact on likelihood of offerFor my experience .... I just got an offer after (most likely) a similar process to you ..... note: to answer your question, i did not email anyone I met.pm if you want to chat/give details off-line

Just wondering if newbies are getting job offers these days.

It will be my 1st full-time job so entry level position .... not total newbie though as I have a lot of fin math knowledge. There are jobs out there but competition is immense. I turned down 3 other places to take this offer so there is some "speculative" interviews/offers out there for entry-level candidates.Good luck

Would you mind telling me something about your background? How much finance do you know? Are you a B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., etc.? In which discipline? Did you or are you attending a top school? Etc. You needn't get into specifics so as to risk revealing your identity. If you like, you can private message me. I just want to assess where I stand in the grand scheme of things.Thanks.musterseed
