MFEs moving to software development?

I want to hear opions about MFE moving into financial software development. This is a relatively cool area to be in right now?

I don't know if it is cool or not but it's a viable alternative.But the pay structure will be that of an IT company than a finance company.

Its cool in a sense that coding skills are never going to hurt in a quant profession.

jomni is right about the possbilities and pay.However, many MFEs lack software development skills, and some are actively hostile to programming.The selling point you have for a s/w job is "business knowledge", being able to understand the issues.It never hurts to be better at programming.
