How to behave as the new guy on the trading floor?

January 6th, 2009, 9:39 pm

Yup,i have the paperwork here and by the end of the month i will have my absolute dream job. I'm not totally sure what my actual role is, but my 3 square feet desk portion is on the trading floor and my job description says that I am "structuring". Now, as a student I had all sorts of jobs to pay for my rent. Really shitty stuff. I have never worked at an i-bank, and that I start my work not at the investment division of some second tier bank but at THE bank... scares me a bit. Now my first contract is limited to half a year (and would be converted into a unlimited contract if I perform) and I want to make an impression as good as possible, be proactive and all that crap but I don't wanna seem like "trying too hard" or like a sucker. So, what should I do? What shouldn't I do?CM

Congrats on getting Goldman! Good luck in your new role. Speak to a couple of the junior strats in your team - they will guide you.

Eyes and ears open. I hesitate to say mouth closed, but if something in the back of your mind tells you to "shut up", do it.Check out what resources published within the firm are available and read some reports, but don't make a big deal over it.Maybe someone can suggest the best stuff to read for current news and practice in Structuring. To your success - (Opps - just posted and Anthis says much of the same - well, that is good I guess)...

Congrats -- you're right, as the junior guy there is a fine line between paying your dues and being a sucker. Go with your gut and make sure you're reliable when it comes to work. ps: Dominic - your new picture looks much nicer.

How to behave as the new guy on the trading floor?

Congratulations on the new job. A real achievement in a tough market!A few tips.1. Be nice to the 'less important' people. Your immediate goal is to get converted to a perm contract and this decision will be taken by someone reasonably senior. This doesn't mean that you should be ignoring the little people. By little people I don't just mean everyone below the Big Boss. Various people from IT, Risk and so on can make your life as a junior a lot easier. When you are under pressure from your boss/team you might feel tempted to pass it on to them. Don't. You'll quickly gain a reputation for being an ass and mysteriously people will be working on higher priority stuff when you need something done.2. Make sure you know who is taking that decision about your future and what the criteria for being kept on are. Solicit feedback from them so you can nip any problems in the bud early on. It doesn't have to be massively formal, just go for a coffee now and again. Try to get a couple of things you are doing right and couple that you are doing wrong and need to improve on.3. Socialize. Go out with your team. Don't be the first guy to go home, but don't be the last either. If you are on some sort of grad program then avoid the temptation to hang out with them all the time. They will be more social but you need to build relations with your team more than with other grads.4. You will probably be working with the junior guys on your team. You will be given some crap that no one really wants to do. Thats tough and thats life as a grad. The trick is not to get landing with recurring, time consuming crap. If you do have a crap job to do, don't procrastinate. It won't go away. Just do it and get it over with. Also, try to get the crap where you at least have interaction with the more senior guys on your team. Might not be very exciting doing some reconciliation between two systems, but if the guy that needs it done talks to the Big Boss then you want to be doing that job.5. Try to exceed what they have given you to do but don't be a perfectionist. You want to deliver the goods plus a noticeable bit on top. Don't try and turn some small bit of analysis into a thesis.6. Remember that there a lot of variables out of your control and indeed out of the Big Bosses control. The Big Boss is not omnipotent. He has a boss too and that boss might tell him that he can't make his junior (you) permanent even if he wants to. Your entire team might get eradicated. The thing about your first job is that for one reason or another you are unlikely to stay. Don't get too cut up if it doesn't work out. Get back in the saddle and use what you know and who you know.
