Congratulations on the two offers!!!!! My two pence:For a finance career without a doubt Tanaka (as long as it really is in Quant Finance). If your topic is "hot" you will be a sought-after commodity.Brand name plus the possibility of moving from there to a Business or Economics or Financial Maths academic career afterwards (if you need/want to). It's in London so internships/part-time jobs are easier to arrange. But keep close to the maths department and keep learning math. There are plenty of places in London to go to for interesting seminar and events (LSE, UCL, King's, ...)Had it been an offer for an applied maths PhD in a different uni i might have thought different... but Birmingham.. mmmmm.. not sure. Edit: but like many people will advice you, do not choose a PhD solely because of career paths available. While important, you should choose it because you really wish to spend 4 years working in an area that you love.
